This month's News @ 11 covers a range of powerful stories reflecting the breadth and depth of IBEW Local 11's work across Los Angeles.
At the heart of downtown LA, more than two dozen Local 11 members are transforming a parking lot into the Colburn Center — a 1,000-seat concert hall and creative space for the Colburn School. Since June 2024, about 26 IBEW members have been on site running conduit, pulling wire, and performing all aspects of electrical work as part of the $335 million, 100,000-square-foot project, which is slated for completion in 2027.
March is also Women's History Month and Women in Construction Week, and this edition recognizes the trailblazing women of IBEW Local 11 — journeywomen, apprentices, and leaders who are building pathways forward for the next generation. The number of women working in construction trades hit a record high in 2024, and Local 11 remains committed to expanding access to apprenticeships and advancing mentorship and leadership development.
This issue also features a Member Profile on Leah Luna, a third-year sound and communications apprentice who went from working nights as a crossing guard and at Chili's to finding financial stability and a thriving career through the union — a story of taking a chance on herself and never looking back.
Business Manager Robert Corona shares updates on the pension's projected return to green status after 14 years, while President Alton Wilkerson reflects on Black History Month, César Chávez Day, and the union's commitment to building a more inclusive future. With the 2028 Summer Olympics on the horizon, Los Angeles — and Local 11 — are gearing up for major projects ahead.
