Strong Work Picture: Advance Your Training!

Sisters and Brothers,

Please be apprised of the following updates to Dispatch at IBEW Local 11. Due to numerous calls and concerns, Travel Letters will be issued starting Monday, February 10, 2020. To receive a Travel Letter, you must request one in person, you must be on the “Out-of-Work” book and your dues must be current. I do this hesitantly as we still have unfilled calls. We need to man the work here to protect our stability now and in the future. In retrospect, I realized the disruption to our members working in other jurisdictions, for whatever reason, and do not wish to hinder their ability to work. I do ask you to consider coming home to work in Los Angeles as we have a robust work picture for years to come. I encourage you to get those certifications needed to ensure you can take any and all calls, then choose which one is best for you. Monetary stipends are being offered to take the classes we see the greatest need to fulfill the contractor’s manpower requests. Look on our website, www.ibew11.org for an updated list of classes and stipends available.

One of our newest contractors, Worley, has most of the electrical work in Marathon refinery. They have a limited workforce so will be hiring from the hall to fulfill their obligations to the customer. Get your RSO 20 Card, TWIC Card, and if you haven’t worked in the refineries, take the Industrial Skills Class offered at the ETI. This class will prepare you to be successful in your endeavor to work in the field. The typical work week is a 4-10 schedule, but during shutdowns and turnarounds, 6 or 7 days a week is not uncommon. We also have other long-time contractors who are securing projects in the other refineries. California Spectra, Contra Costa and Herzog will be hiring in the near future. All the refineries in California are covered under a Project Labor Agreement. This is a great benefit as we haven’t had the work in refineries for several decades. Please, embrace this work which will provide for you and your family for a long time.

Fraternally,

Joel Barton
IBEW 11 Business Manager
