Getting Ready to Succeed: IBEW 11 Mentors Future Apprentices

On a Saturday morning at IBEW /NECA’s Electrical Training Institute in Commerce, nearly 100 potential Electricians and volunteer mentors are gathering. Some are just out of high school, some are a few years into the work force, and some are older and thinking about changing careers. They’re all here to take classes to prepare for the apprentice test that will be offered four days later.

IBEW 11 Takes Part in Historic Civil Rights March

Forty-seven years after a historic civil rights march, IBEW Local 11 members joined other groups to put voting rights and labor issues on the agenda.

Early in March, thousands made their way on a five-day, 55-mile march from Selma to the state capital, Montgomery, to commemorate the anniversary of the Selma marches of 1965.

The group from IBEW Local 11 included Business Manager Marvin Kropke, Shomari Davis, Tom DeMoor, Diana Limon, Luis Arida, Gary Parker, Anthony Mitchell and Herb Lyons.

For two weeks in March, almost everyone in Los Angeles was talking about the Rock. No, not the action movie star. This rock is a 340-ton boulder, carved from a quarry by artist Michael Heizer. He called it “Levitating Mass” and planned to have it installed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
